The Conjunctions

The connecting expressions connect clause constituents (matka a otec), clauses inside the utterance (matka žije, ale otec zemřel) and individual utterances to each other (Když otec zemřel, matka byla dva roky sama, ale pak se znovu vdala a s mým nevlastním otcem žije dodnes.) It is a coordinating connection (a, i, nebo) and also determinating connection (když, protože).

Besides the conjunctions, also the relative pronouns serve as connecting words: jaký, který, čí, kdo, co, jenž and the relative adverbs: kam, kde, kdy, jak. There are also multiverbal connecting expressions: jako kdyby, pokud jde o, and proto.

The conjunctions are an important means of text construction and provide cohesion and coherence to texts.
